Background

Professor Ramzi Khamis is a consultant cardiologist at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust with a joint academic appointment as a Professor in cardiology at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London. As well as general cardiology, Prof Khamis is subspecialised in interventional cardiology. He undertakes his interventional work and on-call commitments for heart attack angioplasty at Hammersmith Hospital and works in the outpatients clinic at Charing Cross Hospital. He is also the Clinical Director of Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust

Prof Khamis has a deep interest and is a leader in the research field of cardiovascular risk stratification. He and his team work on the innovative development of interventional cardiology technologies for the diagnosis and treatment of coronary artery disease, which is the leading single cause of death globally. His research team, comprising of clinical fellows, PhD students and technical assistants work on linking the immune system to atherosclerosis and in using this link in both improving diagnosis and treatment for this killer disease. He sits on international cardiology journal editorial and international cardiology meeting boards, and is regularly invited to speak in national and international forums on research, training and public health aspects for cardiovascular medicine.

Prof Khamis qualified in Bristol in 2000 and underwent extensive training in leading UK institutions. He did most of his senior house officer training as part of the Barts and the Royal London rotation. He completed his specialist and subspecialist training at Imperial College and its affiliated hospitals.

Aside from his clinical duties, Prof Khamis is the cardiology clinical lead for communications at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.
