How can work experience help in my application for medical school?

In medical school admission interviews, we look for students who have taken the initiative to gain a deeper understanding of what life as a doctor is like. Work experience is an excellent way to gain valuable insight into the realities of medical practice and to confirm that this is the right career path for you.

We understand that face-to-face work experience isn't always an option for everyone. That's why we've designed a virtual work experience programme that's more accessible and provides similar insights and experiences.

What is the cost of these programmes?

All our programmes are completely free for students.

If you have difficulty accessing the technology needed to participate in our virtual programmes, please contact us or ask a representative from your school to reach out via email at imperial.work.experience@nhs.net

Why should I attend?

  • Interactive sessions with doctors, health professionals, educators and medical students.
  • Critical and creative thinking: explore the challenges and opportunities on the path to medical school in a supportive environment
  • Experience NHS life: gain insight in to the fast-paced, complex world of a junior doctor in the NHS
  • Explore career opportunities: Broaden your understanding of the many roles within healthcare, ask questions, and reflect on clinical case studies.

Don't miss out on this chance to gain valuable insights and start your journey toward a rewarding career in healthcare!

Why do I need a referee from my school?

For patient safety, it's essential that we ensure every one involved in the healthcare team has been identified and verified before stepping into the clinical environment. Schools pla a crucial role in this process by helping us confirm the identify of students. This allows us to arrange safe and secure placements, ensuring the wellbeing of both students and the patients they will see!
