About
The acute oncology service provides an organisational framework for the management of both cancer and treatment-related emergencies. We facilitate the rapid specialist assessment and management of patients presenting with an acute cancer or treatment-related condition.
Conditions and treatments
We treat conditions including:
- infections during cancer treatment
- cancer compressing the spinal cord
- infections or blood clots in long lines
- diarrhoea caused by a cancer treatment
- uncontrolled nausea, vomiting or mouth soreness caused by a cancer treatment
- abnormal levels of salts in the blood
- excess fluid around the heart, lungs or abdomen requiring drainage
- symptoms from cancers in the brain
- low red blood cells or platelets requiring urgent transfusion
