The acute oncology service provides an organisational framework for the management of both cancer and treatment-related emergencies. We facilitate the rapid specialist assessment and management of patients presenting with an acute cancer or treatment-related condition.

Conditions and treatments

We treat conditions including:

  • infections during cancer treatment
  • cancer compressing the spinal cord
  • infections or blood clots in long lines
  • diarrhoea caused by a cancer treatment
  • uncontrolled nausea, vomiting or mouth soreness caused by a cancer treatment
  • abnormal levels of salts in the blood
  • excess fluid around the heart, lungs or abdomen requiring drainage
  • symptoms from cancers in the brain
  • low red blood cells or platelets requiring urgent transfusion
