We provide rapid access gynaecology services at Queen Charlotte’s & Chelsea Hospital and at St Mary’s Hospital. Our clinics are designed to offer prompt assessment for women who have been referred urgently with possible gynaecological cancer, to diagnose or rule out the disease as soon as possible. Both rapid access clinics are managed by teams experienced in diagnostic gynaecology. We offer dedicated ultrasound scan appointments and we aim to provide an ultrasound on the day of your visit. We also offer easy access to MRI and CT scans. In addition, our rapid access clinics have direct access to the outpatient hysteroscopy service for assessment of the endometrium (lining of the uterus/womb).

Both rapid access clinics are managed by teams experienced in diagnostic gynaecology. For women who are found to have cancer in the rapid access service, the multidisciplinary team in the clinic will explain the diagnosis and treatment options together with providing information, support and a clear plan of the next steps. Women with gynaecological cancer are then cared for by the wider team at the West London Gynaecology Cancer Centre.

Patient information

Before your appointment

You will receive your appointment within two weeks of referral. We encourage you to bring a friend or family member with you to your appointment. We will ensure that a female chaperone is available to you, as you will likely have an intimate examination. We suggest you wear comfortable clothes that are easy to remove.

Please check your appointment letter for any special instructions. We suggest you bring a list of any medications you are taking, details of any allergies you may have, and any questions for the clinician.

During your appointment

Please check in using the kiosk or simply check in at reception. We try to perform as many investigations as possible during each appointment, so waiting times and appointment times may vary. Please expect your appointment to take up to four hours to allow for these investigations.

Please note that we are a teaching hospital, so medical students may be present for some appointments. If you do not wish to have them in the room please let the nurse or doctor know and the students will be asked to step outside.

During your appointment, you may be seen by several members of staff and have an ultrasound scan or other investigation such as hysteroscopy and blood tests. We aim to perform as many of the required investigations as possible on the same day, but if that is not possible, we will give you dates and times for other required investigations. We will also give you information leaflets about any other investigations required.

After your appointment

You will be given details of the follow-up plan and how your investigation results will be communicated. This may be with a phone call or another face-to-face appointment. If you need to be seen by another team then the details for that process will be communicated to you by the doctor and/or the specialist nurse in the clinic.
