Patient information

Before your appointment

You will normally be seen within a week of referral. You are welcome to bring a relative, close friend or carer with you to your appointment, but this person must be an adult. You are welcome to ask for a chaperone and we will endeavour to provide one for you.

During your appointment

Please check in at the main reception desk and complete a registration form.

This is a one-stop clinic. Please expect your appointment to take up to three hours, as you will see administrative staff, a clinical specialist nurse and a doctor. You will be offered a separate appointment to speak to a counsellor should you wish.

Please note that we are a teaching hospital, so medical students may be present for some appointments. If you do not wish to have them in the room please let the nurse or doctor know and the students will be asked to step outside.

At your appointment, an administrator will first take your details and register you with St Mary’s Hospital. After this you will see a nurse specialist who will take a medical history, discuss the options available to you and perform any necessary blood tests. She will also help you to choose a method of birth control to use in the future.

You will then see the doctor, who will perform an ultrasound scan (unless you have already had one) to confirm how many weeks pregnant you are. The doctor will then discuss with you which methods of termination are available.

The doctor will explain the procedure, complete a consent form with you and discuss birth control, options with you. The doctor will then arrange a date for the procedure with you; we aim to offer treatment within five working days of your clinic appointment and usually offer treatment within the same week.

After your appointment

You will be given a date for your procedure at St Mary's Hospital.

Please note that we are a tertiary referral centre and as such, can only accept referrals for women who cannot be treated within non-hospital termination services due to medical or surgical co-morbidities.
