Patient information

Before your appointment

Current waiting times for consultations are around six weeks from referral. You are welcome to bring a family member, close friend, guardian or carer with you to your appointment.

You are also welcome to ask for a chaperone and we will endeavour to provide one for you. We recommend wearing comfortable clothes to your appointment, as you may need to have an abdominal or pelvic examination. Please bring a list of any medications you are taking as well as the results of previous investigations, if possible.

During your appointment

Please note that we are a teaching hospital, so medical students may be present for some appointments. If you do not wish to have them in the room please let the nurse or doctor know and the students will be asked to step outside.

Waiting times may be up to two hours, and your appointment will likely take 15 to 20 minutes. We may ask you to complete a validated questionnaire about your symptoms before you see the doctor.

At your first appointment you will be seen by one of the doctors in the fibroid team who will take a detailed history of your symptoms and examine you to assess your problem. You may have some tests, including an ultrasound scan, an MRI scan and blood tests.

After your appointment

Prior to any decision regarding treatment, all women will require review by a doctor and either an ultrasound or MRI. You can expect to receive a follow-up appointment to review the results of any investigations and discuss treatment or management of your condition.
