Maternal medicine

What is the maternal medicine service? 

The maternal medicine service (otherwise known as the obstetric medicine service) provides outpatient and inpatient care for women and birthing people affected by any medical disease during pregnancy. We also offer pre-pregnancy counselling. 

Why do we have a maternal medicine service? 

You may be referred to the maternal medicine service if you had a medical condition before becoming pregnant, or if you have a specific pregnancy-related disease.   

Our highly respected, nationally commissioned maternal medicine service receives referrals from GPs and hospitals across the UK and internationally.  
 
We have a team of experts from different relevant disciplines, including specialist doctors and midwives who offer pre-pregnancy counselling and help women during their pregnancy, labour and following the birth of their baby. 

When do you go to the maternal medicine service?

You might be referred to the maternal medicine service if you need support with conditions such as: 

• neurological conditions 
• heart problems  
• high blood pressure 
• diabetes 
• endocrine/glandular problems  
• joint and connective tissue problems 
• bowel conditions 
• kidney/renal problems 
• lung/respiratory conditions 
• liver and metabolic disorders 
• haematological/blood disorders including sickle cell disease 
• thrombosis and coagulation problems 
• cancer
