Our major trauma centre provides a 24-hour consultant-led service for both adults and children.
We are one of London's four major trauma centres and treat serious injuries. Our trauma centre works closely with many teams to deliver expert care for our patients. Our team consists of physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists and dietitians.
Conditions and treatments
Our major trauma centre treats serious conditions including head, chest, abdominal or skeletal injuries that have been sustained as a result of an accident, sport or violence.
Our centre delivers expert care for seriously injured patients and can provide high dependency support.
We have a specialist therapy service which ensures rehabilitation is started as soon as possible and that ongoing rehab needs are assessed and arranged as required.
We have a multidisciplinary team which includes physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, clinical neuropsychologists and dietitians with a wide variety of specialist skills including neurosciences, paediatrics, orthopaedics, amputee prosthetic limb management, hand therapy and acute respiratory management.
Clinics
Our clinic runs 24 hours a day, seven days per week. Patients can self-present at A&E.

GP advice
When your patient is discharged from our major trauma centre we will send you a discharge letter with details of the outcomes and any treatment received.
Many patients will also have a rehabilitation prescription to guide any ongoing rehabilitation and care needs. Patients will be given copies of these letters before they leave hospital. If the patient does not remember their GP's details or is not registered with a GP this information cannot be sent.
Patient information
Major trauma is an emergency situation, therefore patients are mainly brought in by ambulance. Some patients admit themselves via A&E at St Mary's Hospital.
Patients arriving at the major trauma centre will be assessed in the emergency department by a resident consultant and the full trauma team.
They will then receive immediate, high-quality, treatment which can include life-saving surgery in our major trauma theatre.
Patients will continue to stay at the major trauma ward until they are stable. Patients will then either be discharged home or transferred to another unit.
This might be a local trauma unit closer to home or another appropriate department for specialist rehabilitation or ongoing care.
Specialist rehabilitation units
We have links with a number of specialist rehabilitation units in north west London. If you need to be transferred to a specialist rehabilitation unit following a traumatic injury, your therapy team will work with you to identify the best unit for your needs.
