Background

Barry Seemungal (PhD FRCP) trained as a neurologist in London and completed a PhD in vestibular neurosciences at the Medical Research Council Human Movement & Balance Unit (UCL).

Dr Seemungal has received research funding from the Academy of Medical Sciences and Health Foundation Clinician Scientist Fellowship Programme and the MRC.

Research & publications

The uncoupling of perception and reflex function in the vestibular and ocular-motor system (for overview: Seemungal. Curr Op Neurol 2014), mechanisms of chronic dizziness, post-traumatic imbalance and dizziness, nystagmus and oscillopsia.

Two key piece of research from Dr Seemungal include a structural brain imaging study showing that the vestibular cerebellar grey matter may independently modulate vestibular perceptual and VOR responses and that vertigo sensation is mediated by an extensive white matter cerebral cortical network; and a human lesion study (Kaski et al., Brain In Press; see US National Library of Medicine for review) which defines the cerebral cortical correlates of vestibular spatial orientation.
