Find out what to expect when you come to hospital for your appointment.

Before your appointment

We aim to see patients within eight weeks of receiving the referral. You are welcome to bring a family member or friend to your appointment.  

Please bring your appointment letter and any previous correspondence/investigations regarding your diagnosis to your appointment. You may also want to bring a list of questions for your consultant. 

Please note, if school-age patients require admission for surgery or medical therapy, unless it is deemed urgent, we plan this to accommodate school commitments and minimise interruptions to the patient’s education. 

During your appointment

Please attend the gynaecology outpatient department as stated in your appointment letter.  

We aim to see all patients on time, but our typical waiting times are about 30 minutes. Your appointment may take up to 90 minutes in order to ensure that you meet all members of the team if required, so please plan for this.  

Please note that we are a teaching hospital, so medical or nursing students may be present for some appointments. If you do not wish to have them in the room, please let the nurse or doctor know and they will be asked to step outside.  
You will be assessed by our team (consultants, clinical psychologist and clinical nurse specialist) so that both physical and psychological issues are identified and addressed, as part of the holistic management of your condition. You will be given verbal and written information about your condition and the available treatment. We are also able to offer psychological support before beginning treatment where appropriate. 
You may need to have a blood test and a vaginal examination at your appointment. 

After your appointment

If appropriate, you will be offered a follow-up appointment. If investigations have been ordered, the results will be discussed at the follow-up appointment.  

Increasingly we are using virtual platforms for appointments. If appropriate, you might be offered a virtual consultation (either video or telephone).
