Background

Dr Barati is a consultant in acute internal medicine at St Mary’s Hospital, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. He completed specialist training in acute internal medicine in April 2024, following structured postgraduate training in internal medicine in the UK. He originally qualified in medicine in 1998 and worked as a general practitioner overseas until 2016, before relocating to the UK.

He has a strong interest and expertise in point-of-care ultrasound. Dr Barati is an accredited supervisor for Focused Acute Medicine Ultrasound (FAMUS) and is listed on the Society for Acute Medicine (SAM) directory of approved supervisors. He also holds accreditation in Focused General Ultrasound in Intensive Care (FUSIC) from the Intensive Care Society.

Dr Barati is highly committed to medical education. He is the undergraduate lead and unit training lead for acute medicine at St Mary’s Hospital, and an honorary clinical senior lecturer at Imperial College London. He has led significant improvements in teaching and training within the acute medical unit, with demonstrable impact on educational quality and outcomes. In recognition of this work, he was awarded the Trust’s Best Teaching Award in 2025. He also established the on-site simulation training programme for the acute medical unit at St Mary’s Hospital.

In addition to his clinical and educational roles, Dr Barati is an active member of the acute medicine virtual ward steering group, contributing to the development and delivery of innovative models of acute care.

Dr Barati specialises in acute internal medicine, managing patients presenting with a wide range of medical conditions during the acute phase of illness.

Research & publications

Dr Barati has led and contributed to several quality improvement initiatives and is actively involved in the Society for Acute Medicine Benchmarking Audit (SAMBA). He currently serves as the local SAMBA lead at St Mary’s Hospital.
