Background

Mr Edward Matthews is an experienced consultant orthopaedic surgeon specialising in complex trauma and hip replacement surgery. His NHS practice is based at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.

With advanced fellowship training in limb reconstruction and revision arthroplasty, he is skilled in managing complex cases, including fracture-related and joint replacement infections. He completed his higher surgical training in Trauma and Orthopaedics in Exeter in 2019, followed by post-CCT fellowship training in limb reconstruction at Imperial and revision arthroplasty at St George’s University Hospitals NHS Trust. He also performs chest wall fixation as part of his Major Trauma team commitments, ensuring comprehensive trauma care.

Research & publications

Beyond his clinical practice, Mr Matthews is actively involved in surgical education and leadership. He holds a postgraduate certificate in surgical education and is a member of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers. He has also completed the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) Clinical Leadership Programme, earning a Level 7 certificate in leadership and management from the Chartered Management Institute.

Mr Matthews regularly presents at international conferences, has spoken at global symposia, and has authored book chapters and journal articles on trauma and arthroplasty. He is a dedicated faculty member on multiple courses, teaching from undergraduate to FRCS level. He has also served as a medical school finals examiner at Imperial College and as a national selection assessor for ST3 entry in trauma and orthopaedics.
