Canal view of the Fleming Centre

The Fleming Centre has been designed to create an accessible, modern research facility which complements its historic setting on the Paddington Basin.

Our design principles

Our aspiration is for the Fleming Centre to provide opportunities for the community and to bring science to life, while benefitting public health and climate change.

A set of design principles will guide our plans as they progress. These include:

  • A design concept fit for the future, with sustainability and wellbeing at its heart.
  • A celebration of the site’s industrial heritage and scientific past, central to repurposing The Bays.
  • Inclusive and versatile spaces to welcome a diverse community.

What the Fleming Centre will deliver

  • Open, collaborative public spaces connected to a rooftop terrace, for institutions, academics, policymakers and the community.
  • Publicly-accessible exhibition and events spaces on the ground and first floors, and a new canal-side café.
  • Workspaces, laboratories, and clinics to enable cutting-edge research.
  • Welcoming outdoor spaces and routes that are safe and accessible.

Materials

The materials for the new centre have been thoughtfully selected to honour the site’s history while introducing contemporary elements:

  • Modern architectural elements: Aluminium windows and copper rainscreen panels offer a modern aesthetic that complements the surrounding architecture.
  • Durability and low maintenance: These materials are robust and require minimal upkeep, ensuring longevity.
  • Distinctive identity: The façade design creates a welcoming and distinctive appearance, enhancing the Centre’s presence.
