First phase of St Mary’s Hospital redevelopment given planning go-ahead

Westminster City Council has granted the Trust planning permission in principle for a brand new building on the St Mary’s Hospital site. The new building is intended to form phase 1 of a redevelopment of the whole of the St Mary’s site, which will be subject to separate consultations and planning applications in the future.

Our plans are for an eight-storey building on the eastern side of the estate at the location of Salton House, the Dumbell, and Victoria and Albert buildings. This will enable us to bring together the majority of St Mary's outpatient services, with supporting diagnostics, currently provided from 40 different locations across the site.

Prior to submitting our planning application we carried out a major engagement and consultation programme to make sure that patients and local residents helped shape our plans. A number of elements have been included in our proposal based on this feedback.

Chief executive, Ian Dalton CBE, said: “We’re very pleased that Westminster City Council has granted us planning permission in principle. It will bring major benefits for our patients and local communities as a key step in enabling us to replace our ageing estate with facilities that reflect and support the fantastic care and innovative treatment provided by our staff.

“The decision represents a huge amount of work on design and planning over the past two years and we are committed to continuing to involve staff, patients, carers, GPs, local residents and other stakeholders with an interest in the hospital’s future at every stage of the development.”

Next steps include establishing our detailed planning obligations through a ‘section 106’ agreement with the Council and seeking stage two Mayoral approval. The Trust is also continuing to develop its funding options, working closely with key partners, Imperial Health Charity, NHS Improvement, NHS England and local clinical commissioning groups.

Notes to editors:

The approval came in the form of a resolution to grant planning permission and is subject to the agreement of detailed planning obligations with the Council’s planning team.
