Local internal medicine training programme
Find out about the Trust’s two-year Locally Employed Doctors Internal Medicine Training (LED IMT) programme. Gain hands-on experience across medical specialties, structured teaching, and research opportunities, preparing you for higher training in a medical speciality.
The local Internal Medicine (LED IMT) Programme at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust is a two‑year structured training pathway for doctors at IMT1/IMT2 level who are committed to pursuing a career in hospital medicine.
All candidates are appointed to a 24‑month programme, which provides the competencies required for entry into Group 2 higher medical specialties, subject to satisfactory completion and a successful final local ARCP.
Doctors aiming to pursue Group 1 specialties and seeking IMT3 posts will be supported in working towards these goals and preparing their applications.
The programme mirrors the Stage‑1 IMT curriculum, providing exposure to geriatric medicine (MoE), critical and intensive care, acute medicine and simulation, along with opportunities to experience a wide range of additional medical sub‑specialties.
This is a locally managed and delivered initiative, with all resident doctors employed directly by Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. All rotations take place on our hospital sites, primarily St Mary’s Hospital, Charing Cross Hospital and Hammersmith Hospital.
Posts are offered in:
- gastroenterology
- oncology
- respiratory medicine
- cardiology
- geriatric medicine
- intensive care
- endocrinology
- renal medicine
- neurology
- haematology
- acute medicine
On successful completion of the programme and a satisfactory final local ARCP, the Trust will confirm that you have achieved the competencies required for higher medical specialty training, supported where appropriate by the nationally recognised Alternative Certificate.
The programme starts each year on the first Wednesday of August.
Locally employed doctors on the programme will benefit from:
- Appointment to a two-year contract with four-month rotations across our Trust services
- Regular outpatient clinic experience, including the management of acutely unwell patients across a broad range of medical specialties, in line with JRCPTB guidance and standards
- A named educational supervisor (ES) for each year of the programme
- 10 days of study leave per year supported by an enhanced personal study budget
- Simulation and PACES training
- Access to e-portfolio (Trust funded)
- An annual review process (local ARCP) with structured support to meet IMT training requirements
- Opportunities to engage in quality improvement, research, leadership, medical education, digital health training and relevant fellowships
- Support and mentoring from the Internal Medicine Training Programme Director (TPD), your Educational Supervisor, and specialty consultants for career development and competency progression
Staying within a single Trust for two years enables locally employed doctors to build strong professional and research networks with expert clinicians in a world‑class teaching and research environment.
