Trust chief operating officer appointed

Ian Bateman has been appointed as chief operating officer at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. Ian has over 20 years experience in healthcare, beginning his career as a care assistant and most recently serving as deputy and then interim chief operating officer at the Trust.

This is a key leadership role at the heart of the Trust, working with executive colleagues to ensure the smooth and effective running of all services across our five hospitals and community facilities, and helping to ensure the highest standards of care.

Ian's appointment comes at a crucial time, with increasing and changing health needs as well as new opportunities, including technological developments and greater collaboration with other acute trusts in north west London.

In addition to his roles at Imperial College Healthcare, Ian managed the Covid-19 vaccination programme for north west London, was chief of staff for urgent and emergency care at NHS England and held senior positions in other health organisations as well as in the charity and housing sectors.

Ian said: "I'm delighted to be appointed to this critical role and to be continuing my career at Imperial College Healthcare. I'm really proud of everything we've achieved over the past couple of years, for the benefit of our patients and community. This includes bringing down waiting times, navigating a range of tricky estates and other challenges, and working more closely with our health and care partners.

"I look forward to building on this, starting with ensuring we maintain high quality care through what is already a very busy winter."

Professor Tim Orchard, chief executive of Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, said: "We've been very fortunate to benefit from Ian's experience and leadership across two stints at the Trust. He has a proven track record and has played a key role in helping us navigate a range of complex challenges and pressures on our hospital. Ian's appointment is good news for patients and staff alike and will help us to build on achievements of the past few years."

Claire Hook, previous chief operating officer for the Trust, left earlier this year to join The Francis Crick Institute as its chief operating officer
