What is the premature birth service?

Our premature birth service is provided across both hospitals within Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust’s maternity services. The clinics are staffed by doctors and midwives with a special interest in preventing birth before you are full-term (37 weeks pregnant). They can also monitor you and your baby during pregnancy through ultrasound scans.

When do you go to the premature birth service?

If you are pregnant and:

  • Have previously experienced a premature birth (before 37 weeks)
  • Have previously experienced a late miscarriage (after 14 weeks)
  • Have had some treatment to your cervix after an abnormal smear test
  • Have previously experienced a premature birth (before 37 weeks) or a late miscarriage (after 14 weeks)
  • If your healthcare provider has concerns about the shape of your womb.
