Building a Better St Mary’s Hospital

We urgently need a new hospital – find out more about our redevelopment programme and how you can help us to create a better St Mary’s

The future St Mary’s Hospital

The St Mary's site is in a busy urban setting in the heart of Paddington. It sits in the centre of the Paddington Opportunity Area.

We've recently seen the delivery of the major Crossrail development, and Paddington Square is about to open. The St Mary's site is now central London's most important regeneration site.

The hospital we need

The new St Mary’s needs to be big enough to meet the growing needs of our local communities, including those living in some of the most deprived neighbourhoods in the country.

More than that, we want St Mary’s to keep its position as a world-class trauma hospital and a centre for life-saving research. With modern facilities, we will be able to care for more patients, respond faster to emergencies and new health issues and undertake more research and clinical trials to help find better treatments and ways of working.

A major acute hospital - especially one hosting a major trauma centre - has to offer a wide range of specialist services, 24/7. It allows us to care for everyone who needs us, from an older person who has suffered a fall to a child with an infection, to a driver involved in a serious collision.

This means:

How we can make this happen

Services must remain open throughout construction of the new St Mary's.

We also need to build the new hospital on a smaller, less sprawling footprint – to help create more joined up patient pathways and to release some of the land for sale to help pay for construction.

Instead of our current patchwork of buildings, we are proposing to have interconnected clinical services within one taller, main, landmark building at the eastern end of the site, where construction work will be least disruptive to patient care.

More than a hospital

Once we have delivered a new hospital, the rest of our site presents a rare opportunity to create something really exciting for Paddington.

Paddington Basin has been comprehensively regenerated over the past 20 years but our site has been left behind. It is difficult to get around and the current hospital blocks public access to the canal, while providing no green or public space.

As well as a state-of-the-art hospital, we will work with local communities to co-design the whole site to create a new neighbourhood with a range of possible uses.

As well as a state-of-the-art hospital, we can work with local communities to co-design the whole site to include a new neighbourhood with a range of possible uses.

From some early research, these uses might include things like:

Public spaces

Local opportunity

While it is still too early to be specific, early work suggests that regeneration of the wider site could also deliver:

Paddington Life Sciences

Paddington Life Sciences is a cluster of life and data science business already emerging around St Mary’s, allowing us to bring industry, researchers and clinicians together with local communities to improve patient care, increase inclusion in research and create more social value.

We would like life sciences, one of the most important and dynamic sectors in the UK economy, to be at the heart of the wider site regeneration. This will create skilled jobs and training, attract more investment, accelerate scientific discoveries and boost the local economy.
