Pathology - new non-toxic semen analysis sample containers

The Andrology laboratory is standardising the containers in which semen analysis and post vasectomy samples, including those collected off-site, will be accepted. This is to ensure the samples arrive in optimal condition for analysis.

The non-toxic containers will only be available as part of an ‘Andrology Sample Kit’ which will also have instructions for sample collection and a form for patient and sample collection details. The sample kits will be available from the 1 February 2016 and can be collected by the patient from the laboratory or ordered by GPs by contacting the laboratory on 0203 313 1039. The laboratory will then arrange for the sample kits to be delivered to GP practices already receiving supplies from Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (ICHNT). Delivery to GP practices outside the ICHNT transport catchment areas will need to be arranged at the time the order is made.

As part of this change it will be laboratory policy from 1 February 2016 to reject any sample received in a container other than that provided in the sample kit.

In addition to the form included in the sample kit, which should be completed and signed by the patient, it will still be necessary to have an appropriate GP request form for semen analysis or post vasectomy semen analysis for each sample.
