We want as many of our staff, patients, partners and local community as possible to shape our redevelopment with us to ensure that we design, build and run buildings that are truly user focused.

We launched a major programme in 2019 to redevelop and refurbish our ageing hospitals to help us:

  • provide the best possible care for our patients, responding to the changing needs of our patients and local communities
  • continue our long legacy of research, innovation and safety
  • ensure the best possible working environment for our staff
  • meet new aspirations for ‘user focus’, community partnership, integrated care and sustainability.

Through a lot of collaborative work, we now have a clear redevelopment approach, driven by a clear organisational strategy, closely aligned with the wider north west London integrated care system. Major estate developments at St Mary’s, Charing Cross and Hammersmith hospitals were included in the Government’s health infrastructure plan announced in September 2019

In a further announcement made in October 2020, the Prime Minister confirmed major redevelopments for all three of our main hospital sites will form part of the Government’s health infrastructure plan. He said that 40 hospitals will be built by 2030, with eight additional schemes invited to bid. The 40 hospitals includes, in phase 2, a rebuild of St Mary’s, a floor-by-floor refurbishment of Charing Cross and a mix of redevelopment and new build at Hammersmith Hospital. You can also read the Trust statement on the Prime Minister’s announcement.

So far, we have been allocated £5m to enable the development of business cases and we are working closely with NHS England and the Department for Health and Social Care. St Mary’s is the site with the most urgent need and where we have the most evolved plans.

We want as many of our staff, patients, partners and local community as possible to shape our redevelopment with us to ensure that we design, build and run buildings that are truly user focused.
