£1.8 million upgrade to Charing Cross Hospital’s Riverside Theatres

Patients receiving treatment at Charing Cross Hospital’s Riverside Theatres will benefit from improved facilities and a more efficient service following a £1.8 million refurbishment and remodelling programme.

The Riverside Theatres comprises four operating theatres providing planned surgery for short-stay patients. Work on the upgrade, which is part funded by a £1 million grant from Imperial College Healthcare Charity, will begin week commencing 27 June and is due to be completed in October 2016. During this time theatre capacity will be expanded at Hammersmith Hospital and on the 14th floor of Charing Cross Hospital.

Coinciding with the upgrade work, a temporary mobile operating theatre will be in use at Charing Cross Hospital from 27 June to provide additional capacity for patients waiting 18 weeks or more, to help reduce waiting lists.

The planned works to Riverside Theatres include:
improving the airflow within the theatre complex allowing a wider range of procedures to be carried out
reopening Theatre 3 which has been closed due to poor airflow
reconfiguring some of the site to improve patient flow and experience through the unit
general refurbishment improving conditions for patients and staff

Dr Helgi Johannsson, Chief of Service for theatres and anaesthetics at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust said:

“Each of the Riverside Theatres treats a large number of patients every day so it is vital that they keep pace with demand. This upgrade to our facilities will allow us to improve the efficiency of our theatres as well carry out a greater range of procedures, helping to boost capacity. We will also be involving patients in the design of the patient journey when receiving treatment at Riverside Theatres.”

Ian Lush, CEO of Imperial College Healthcare Charity, said:

“Having an operation can be a stressful time for patients. Upgrading the facilities at the Riverside Theatres is essential to improving the experience of our patients, staff and families, as well as bringing them up to a standard which better reflects the very high quality of clinical care provided. We are pleased that the charity has been able to make this significant investment in the Trust’s facilities.”
