Staff raise money for More Smiles Appeal

A charity 5-aside-football tournament has raised more than £1,000 for the More Smiles Appeal to help expand and improve the Children’s Intensive Care Unit at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington.

The event organised by Imperial College Healthcare Charity, saw 20 teams of staff from the five hospitals of Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust compete over the course of three hours at the Old Football Pitches in Hyde Park.

Nurses, doctors, midwives and other staff showed off their football skills during the tournament which was eventually won by a team of physiotherapists, known as ‘Bayern Bru’, who have now won the tournament two years in a row.

Ian Lush, Chief Executive of Imperial College Healthcare Charity, said:

“A big thank you to everyone who played in the tournament or came along to help or support. Now in its third year, the event is always hugely popular among hospital staff who enjoy competing against colleagues while raising money for good causes within their place of work.

“We’re thrilled so many teams got involved this year in support of the More Smiles Appeal. The money that they’ve raised will go towards much needed improvements to St Mary’s Hospital Children’s Intensive Care Unit so that more children and families can benefit from the exceptional care it provides.”

The St Mary’s Hospital More Smiles Appeal is a joint appeal between two charities, COSMIC (Children of St Mary’s Intensive Care) and Imperial College Healthcare Charity. It is aiming to raise at least £2million to help fund the £10 million expansion of the Children’s Intensive Care Unit at St Mary’s Hospital, London.
