Leadership development programme at Imperial scoops prestigious HR award

An innovative leadership programme - which was created to develop healthcare staff across Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust - has scooped top prize in the HPMA Excellence in HRM Awards 2015.

The awards have been recognising and rewarding outstanding work in healthcare human resource management for more than 20 years.

Winning projects, such as the leadership programme at Imperial, have made a real difference to patient care and influenced HR practice in healthcare and beyond.

Staff at the Trust were delighted to win the Academi Wales Award for Leadership Development at the national awards ceremony held at Hammersmith Novotel last night.

The judges commented that the programme is a “holistic approach to creating a streamlined and cohesive structure for leadership development.”

Since it was introduced a year ago, 137 leaders across the Trust have completed the programme.

Jayne Mee, Director of People & Organisation Development explained:  “This is an innovative and comprehensive suite of five leadership development programmes which we created for every level of leadership across the Trust.

“It replaced a number of ad-hoc programmes and was designed to change the culture and improve the engagement of staff.  Each of the five programmes has been designed to directly impact on improving patient care and allows staff to apply their learning to a real problem or situation.  An evaluation showed that 100 per cent of staff who took part in the new programmes would recommend them to a colleague.”

Jayne added:  “We are thrilled that our leadership programmes have been recognised in this way.  We were finalists in a further three categories, which demonstrates how we have raised the profile of People and OD at Imperial.”
