Trust surgeon wins academic award

A surgeon from Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust has won an award for his outstanding academic performance.

Mr Daniel Leff,39, a consultant oncoplastic breast surgeon at the Trust was awarded the Gukas Award from the University of East Anglia (UEA) for his exceptional performance on the university’s specialist clinical masters programme in oncoplastic breast surgery.

On receiving the award Daniel said: “I am exceptionally proud and humbled to have been awarded the Gukas Award. My time on the onocoplastic breast surgery masters course was invaluable to helping me develop my skills further to benefit my future patients. I cannot thank the Trust, UEA or my family enough for their support during my studies.”

UEA’s specialist clinical masters programme is designed to provide specialist oncoplastic breast surgeons with the key skills they need to perform this complex surgery. It covers all aspects of breast surgery including removal of both benign and malignant breast tumours.  Oncoplastic breast surgery represents the integration of plasticsurgerytechniques into breast cancersurgeryso that reconstruction of the breast can be completed without delay; improving the quality of life for patients without compromising local control of disease.

Divisional director of surgery, cancer and cardiovascular at the Trust, Professor Jamil Mayet said:

The Gukas Award is awarded to the best outgoing student from the specialist clinical masters programme run by UEA.
