Vascular surgery

St Mary’s vascular unit is world-renowned for historical, clinical and research achievements in the treatment of vascular disease, most notably in the aorta and carotid territories. The first carotid endarterectomy was performed at St Mary’s Hospital and the hospital has the largest series of hybrid surgical/endovascular procedures for complex aortic disease in the world.

The unit is ranked consistently as one of the top vascular units in the country by Dr Foster, an independent assessor of healthcare outcomes and has an active innovative research programme that includes robotic approaches to the treatment of vascular disease.

A consultant vascular surgeon is available every day on-call.

There is a 24-hour regional service for vascular emergencies and a 24-hour national service for complex aortic vascular disease.  

All consultants submit outcome data to the national vascular database and the overall standardised mortality rate for arterial intervention is one of the best in the UK.

Location
The inpatient facilities are spread across two dedicated wards and a High dependency unit. Zachary Cope and Samual Lane wards are on the 8th floor of QEQM building and a five-bed vascular high dependency unit is co-located with ZC ward.

There is a dedicated vascular/endovascular theatre suite with two arterial lists running every day. State of the art imaging facilities are located on the 3rd floor of the QEQM building which also houses the only purpose built vascular robotic endovascular system in the UK.

The Irvine vascular studies unit for non-invasive vascular studies is in Mary Stanford wing.
