Stroke services

The Imperial stroke centre incorporates two stroke units (one based at St Mary’s and one at Charing Cross Hospital) and a hyper acute stroke unit at Charing Cross Hospital.

The hyper acute stroke unit (HASU) is one of eight in London and provides the initial investigation, treatment and care immediately following a stroke. Patients will spend on average 72 hours in the HASU before being transferred to their local stroke unit for on-going multidisciplinary inpatient care.

The stroke centre runs a 24/7 thrombolysis (‘clot–busting’) service for appropriate patients who present within four and a half hours of their stroke in the emergency department. We have links with London Ambulance Service (LAS) to transport such patients directly to Charing Cross Hospital’s emergency department, which is linked to the Trust’s HASU.

Stroke patients are all reviewed by a consultant stroke physician and a neurologist to optimise investigation and management. Patients will be seen in an outpatient follow-up clinic following their discharge.

We offer a consultant-led TIA (‘mini-stroke’) investigation service at both Charing Cross and St Mary’s hospitals. Specialist review is available on the same day for high risk TIAs, or within a week in a specialist neurovascular clinic for all others. Neuro-surgical and vascular surgical intervention is available on-site.

The team also includes stroke specialist registrars (SpRs), clinical nurse specialists and multidisciplinary therapists.
