Pharmacy

The pharmacy department is spread across four hospital sites and provides a comprehensive pharmacy service including dispensing, provision of medicines information and aseptic compounding.

We also have specialist pharmacists for admissions and discharge, anticoagulation, cancer services, cardiovascular services, clinical haematology, clinical trials, infectious diseases, HIV, medicine, paediatrics, neurosciences, renal, research and surgery. The pharmacists are well supported by a team of pharmacy technicians, pharmacy assistants, clerical and scientific staff. A pharmacist visits each ward daily.

Our main areas of research relate to medication safety and the use of technology to improve service.

Our dispensaries are open seven days a week (including weekends and most bank holidays).

Our medicines information department answers queries about medications and also operates a medicine helpline for patients. The service uses a variety of online and paper information sources and can call on the expertise of a number of specialist pharmacists to provide evaluated answers to questions about medicines.

An aseptic compounding service is provided from Charing Cross and Hammersmith hospitals.

New patients attending the outpatients department may be issued with a prescription (to be dispensed at the hospital) or a blue letter to take to their GP. If a hospital prescription is issued, this will generally be for four weeks supply of medication unless a shorter course is specified.

Patients are encouraged to bring in their own medication if they are to be admitted as an inpatient. This allows a more accurate medication history to be taken and avoids confusion during their stay and on discharge. A discharge letter, including the patient’s medication at the point of discharge, is sent to a patient’s GP following an inpatient hospital stay.
