Pathology

Pathology services at the Trust offer a full range of laboratory investigations, support and advice. Laboratories are located at each hospital, providing 24 hour services where necessary. The Trust also provides pathology services under contract to Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Services include:

• Microbiology - full range of diagnostic services including bacterial culture, serological investigations, TB studies, parasite identification and mycological services
• Cellular pathology - incorporating cytopathology, histopathology and mortuary services
• Clinical biochemistry - offering a comprehensive routine, specialist and out-of-hours emergency service
• Clinical Immunology – full range of diagnostic services including autoimmune serology, cellular immunology, molecular diagnostics and Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics services.
• Haematology - which incorporates the blood transfusion services on site. A full diagnostic service and out-of-hours emergency service is provided
• Virology - full range of diagnostic services including viral culture, serological investigations and molecular detection

Results are transmitted electronically to GP practices and electronic requesting of pathology investigations is being made available.

Clinical advice from pathologists or senior scientists is available around the clock.

Advice on point of care testing including quality control support is given to those practices wishing to undertake some testing locally.

Direct access to pathology services is covered by a service level agreement between the Trust and PCTs. Phlebotomy services are provided at Charing Cross and Hammersmith hospitals.

The hospitals provide a courier service for the collection of specimens from most GP practices. Specimens may be delivered directly to any of the hospital sites although GP work is processed at Charing Cross Hospital.

Please note that pathology results cannot be given directly to patients. Patients wishing to enquire about pathology results should contact the requesting doctor. If any patients have a query with regard to the pathology service, they will be directed appropriately by calling the numbers above.
