The paediatric speech and language therapy (SLT) department provides a comprehensive service to infants and children with communication and/or feeding/swallowing problems. The speech and language therapists form an integral part of the multidisciplinary medical and therapy team. The service provides assessment and advice for the diagnosis, treatment and management of disorders of swallowing, eating and drinking and early communication skills in infants and children, both as inpatients and outpatients
Specialist paediatric clinicians provide a service for infants and children with feeding and swallowing difficulties, taking referrals from consultants within the Trust or from members of the multidisciplinary team.
Paediatric referrals for videofluoroscopy are accepted from community paediatricians, hospital based neonatologists, paediatricians and speech and language therapists at other hospitals. All videofluoroscopy referrals require a consultant signature.
Children with speech, language or voice difficulties are not seen by the paediatric speech and language therapy service and would need to be referred directly to their appropriate community SLT team.
Children with severe and complex special needs are referred on to the speech and language therapists in the appropriate child development service.
