Pharmacists visit the paediatric wards daily and assess every child’s prescription for safety and efficacy. We advise doctors on appropriate prescribing and nurses on drug administration, focusing on particular problems for children centred on the fact that many drugs are not licensed for younger age groups and may not be available in appropriate formulations.
We also check drug histories on admission and ensure seamless care on discharge, communicating with GPs and community pharmacists about obtaining “specials” – medicines made under a specials license rather than a product license. We also provide information about medicines for parents and children.
We dispense all prescriptions for children from clinics and paediatric A&E, as well as all discharge prescriptions for children and any non-stock ward items required by the paediatric wards.
The dispensary issues between 100 and 200 items each day.
