We run a friendly inpatient service seeing babies, children and young people with acute and long-standing neurological problems as well as an outpatient service with three consultant clinics a week and a supervised registrar clinic. In addition, we have several combined /transition clinics with our adult neurology colleagues for children and young people with epilepsy, demyelination disorders and headaches. Additional consultant clinics are due to start in 2011 in the paediatric outpatient department at Hammersmith Hospital.
In the past year, over 1,000 children have been seen in the outpatient service.
We have excellent working relationships with colleagues in the neuroradiology and neurophysiology department, with whom we hold regular weekly combined meetings and for review and discussion of complex cases. There is close networking with other paediatric specialists and general paediatricians.
There is a regular neuro-developmental ward round with joint input from all the various therapists. In this multidisciplinary setting children who have been admitted to any of the paediatric wards or intensive care units (PICU and NICU) are discussed as well as discharged patients to ensure adequate follow-up.
There is a monthly neurosciences meeting open to paediatricians, psychologists and therapists and to which colleagues from neighbouring hospitals are also invited; others are also welcome to attend.
