General paediatrics

Our general paediatric service provides consultant led care to children on the Great Western ward, the short stay unit (PSSU) and outpatients.

Great Western ward

Children with chronic or complex problems requiring longer stays in hospital are looked after in this unit. Hospital school and social services are closely integrated. Nephrology, neurology and surgical patients are jointly managed by the paediatricians and specialist teams.

Paediatric short stay unit (PSSU)

The PSSU provides convenient ‘hospital at home’ care for children, minimising inpatient stay whenever possible. This is achieved by working closely with colleagues in the paediatric emergency department, GPs and community nursing teams.

The service educates families and empowers them to manage health conditions at home and provide access to an integrated network of healthcare professionals including GPs, community nursing staff, social services and medical specialists.
