Paediatric allergy and respiratory medicine

We are one of the few centres in the UK to provide a comprehensive service to children with allergic and/or respiratory disease.
The service provides a thorough assessment of children with the full spectrum of respiratory and allergic conditions including any chest problem (acute or chronic), asthma, eczema, hay fever, urticaria (hives or nettle rash), angioedema (swelling), food allergy including complex enteropathies, drug allergy, anaphylaxis and latex, wasp and bee venom anaphylaxis.

We run joint clinics with our dermatology, gastroenterology and ENT colleagues to deal with complex combined disorders. There is close liaison with child and adolescent psychiatry to deal with feeding disorders and other psychosocial problems that arise in the service. Our multidisciplinary team includes six allergy nurse specialists, dietician, research fellows, psychologist and psychiatrist.
We perform allergen challenges in a safe environment with highly trained and experienced staff. Administration of omalizumab (anti-IgE) and allergen immunotherapy is also done under very close supervision on our day unit. We have state-of-the-art lung function testing and polysomnography facilities. The immunology laboratory provides comprehensive testing for immunodeficiency and the clinical immunologist has a joint clinic with the paediatricians to deal with primary immunodeficiency patients. Regular clinical and research meetings ensure a fully coordinated service with rapid introduction of new investigative and therapeutic strategies. There is a large translational research programme with team members involved in the development of national care pathways for the management of allergic children and management guidelines via RCPCH, NICE, BTS/SIGN and BSACI.

We run two allergy MSc courses (via Imperial College) and are one of only three centres in the country to provide national grid training for registrars.

Our multidisciplinary team includes six allergy nurse specialists, dietician, research fellows, psychologist and psychiatrist.
