Adolescent medicine

The adolescent service continues to evolve rapidly. Our service is one of the pilot sites working with the Department of Health on a project to introduce ‘You’re Welcome’, adolescent friendly criteria into acute paediatric settings.

In addition to transitional clinics in a number of specialties (diabetes, epilepsy, HIV and a young people’s sexual health clinic, ARC, with an outreach service in the community), five dedicated adolescent evening clinics are offered in a newly decorated, dedicated adolescent area in outpatients.

Clinics in adolescent endocrinology, rheumatology, allergy, haemoglobinopathy and general paediatrics are held on a monthly basis.
The paediatric wards now have an adolescent den where adolescent inpatients have the possibility of staying up later than the younger children, spending time in their own environment. Inpatient adolescents are supported by the play specialists and the hospital school service. They receive excellent support from our child and adolescent mental health colleagues when the need arises.
