St Mary’s has a newly opened dedicated acute imaging centre containing Europe’s first GE V750 3T MRI system and a 256-slice CT. 

The centre includes a large three-bed preparation and recovery area with full anaesthetic equipment, monitoring and a patient hoist.

The centre is designed to provide early access to cutting-edge cross-sectional imaging for acute, trauma and critical care patients. The centre will increase the proportion of patients having rapid access to sophisticated cross-sectional imaging, including general trauma imaging, vascular imaging, including assessment of cerebral vessels, peripheral arteries and coronary arteries, as well as brain and solid organ perfusion.

There are two fully-equipped vascular, theatre-standard interventional suite, and a high specification fluoroscopy room with digital plate. The vascular lab is fitted with a Hansen robot as part of a R&D project run in conjunction with Imperial College looking at robotic insertion of aortic endovascular stents.

The MRI department has a further two MRI scanners, performing MRI thermal mapping of tumour ablations in support of a research programme headed by Professor Gedroyc who is also leading on the use of minimally invasive methods for tissue destruction.

The imaging department is on the 3rd floor of the QEQM building with an additional gynaecology ultrasound department in the Winston Churchill wing.

MRI is located in the basement of Clarence wing.
A&E on the 1st floor of QEQM, adjacent to A&E while a new digital imaging fracture clinic is found in Salton house.
The acute imaging centre is on the ground floor of the QEQM building.
