Hepatology

The hepatology service deals with the diagnosis and management of all forms of liver disease. 

St Mary’s liver unit and antiviral centre is an internationally recognised centre for the management of patients with viral hepatitis. The multidisciplinary group produces some of the best results in the UK. 

The unit is heavily involved in developing new treatments for hepatitis B and C, fatty liver disease associated with obesity and diabetes, alcohol induced liver disease and primary liver cancer including hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma.

Specialist clinics include:

  • Antiviral  
  • Clinic with counseling
  • Management and antiviral treatment of patients with chronic viral hepatitis (B and C)
  • NASH/NAFLD: joint clinic with diabetes group for fatty liver disease
  • Management of patients with viral hepatitis and HIV co-infection
  • A family clinic for mothers and babies infected with hepatitis B and C
  • Cirrhosis clinic for patients with advanced liver disease
  • Diagnosis and management by phlebotomy of haemochromatosis patients and their families
  • Diagnosis and treatment of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma
  • Diagnosis and treatment of patients with cholangiocarcinoma
  • Transplant clinic for the assessment and management of patients pre and post-liver transplantation

The Hesketh hepatology clinical research facility aims to facilitate the development of new therapies for all types of liver disease. Patients are invited to take part in these research programmes but may also choose to be treated in the standard way. Support groups are available for patients with several types of liver disease.

  • Clinics are held in the main outpatients department on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.
  • The liver and antiviral unit is on the 10th floor, QEQM building

St Charles Hospital

  • Clinics are held on Wednesday.
