Gynaecology
The gynaecology services at St Mary’s Hospital diagnose and treat a range of disorders affecting the female reproductive organs. We offer general gynaecological advice and treatment as well as a range of specialist services including:
- Outpatient hysteroscopy
A one-stop outpatient service for the investigation of menstrual disorders, endometrial biopsy, retrieval of IUCDs and removal of small polyps. The service operates in the day surgery unit and offers hysteroscopy without the need for general anaesthesia. Referrals are accepted directly from GPs
- Termination of pregnancy
This service provides a dedicated pathway for early medical, late medical and surgical terminations. The outpatient clinic is based at the Raymede Clinic within St Charles Hospital, in partnership with Westside Contraceptive Services. Terminations are undertaken at St Mary’s Hospital and include provision in the Paintin unit for early medical terminations. There is a central booking service on 020 8962 4450 which also accepts external referrals. The lead consultant is available via this number to discuss tertiary referrals and complex cases
- Oncology
The rapid access clinic is dedicated to the diagnosis and initial management of patients referred with suspected cancer, with direct access to imaging. There is an oncology follow-up clinic, counselling service for patients treated at the cancer centre and a ‘vaginal dilator service’ for patients who have had lower genital tract radiotherapy or surgery. There are close links with the palliative care team
- Minimal access service
This service undertakes advanced laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery. St Mary’s Hospital is a tertiary referral centre with a multidisciplinary team for the holistic management of endometriosis
- Emergency gynaecology
A 24-hour consultant-led service for early pregnancy and acute gynaecological problems that incorporates a 09.00 to 17.00 direct referral from GPs appointment service. Medical and surgical management of miscarriage and ectopic pregnancies is offered
- Colposcopy
A consultant-led service offering colposcopic management of cervical, vaginal and vulval abnormalities and multi-centric disease. It sees patients with HIV disease and immunosuppressed patients with complex lower genital tract abnormalities, offering surgical and medical treatment of vulval pre-cancerous abnormalities. Nurse colposcopists provide an advice service to patients and GP practices
- Urogynaecology
The only sub-specialty urogynaecology unit in north-west London which manages urinary and faecal incontinence, and vaginal prolapse. Conservative and surgical treatments are offered, including complex reconstructive surgery, and there are one-stop clinics to facilitate distant referrals. There is a specialist perineal clinic for patients with post-partum problems
- Fibroid clinic
A specialist clinic offering fertility preserving non-surgical treatment options, in collaboration with the department of radiology. These include MR-guided focused ultrasound and fibroid embolisation
- Reproductive medicine
Infertility services/reproductive endocrinology
A multidisciplinary team, comprising of specialists in reproductive medicine, surgery and endocrinology, a clinical nurse specialist and a fertility counsellor.
The fertility service includes assessment of female and male fertility, treatment of ovulatory disorders and fertility surgery. St Mary’s is a HFEA licensed centre for super-ovulation and intrauterine insemination offering assessment for IVF, ICSI, and egg and sperm donation, although these services are not provided on site.
Subspecialty services include clinics in menopause, premature ovarian failure and polycystic ovarian syndrome, as well as psychosexual counselling
