The gastroenterology department provides a comprehensive service for the diagnosis and care of patients with a wide range of gastroenterological conditions including inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome/functional dyspepsia, coeliac disease, peptic ulcer disease/gastro-oesophageal reflux, gastrointestinal bleeding and nutritional problems.
There are weekly upper GI, colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease multidisciplinary team meetings and we work closely with colleagues in radiology, pathology and surgery.
There are general gastroenterology outpatient clinics, inflammatory bowel disease outpatient clinics and a direct access endoscopy service. We also provide a comprehensive physiology service including breath testing, anorectal physiology, oesophageal impedance monitoring, high resolution manometry and Bravo capsule Ph monitioring.
All aspects of luminal endoscopy are carried out to a very high standard including complex colonoscopy and polypectomy. St Mary’s is a tertiary referral centre for the treatment of early cancer in the stomach and the oesophagus. We utilise various technologies to enhance the detection of early cancer and offer treatment with mucosal resection and HALO radio-frequency ablation. We also perform endoscopic ultrasound to assess and stage tumours in the upper GI tract.
We also undertake management of difficult gastrointestinal bleeding and other small bowel problems with the aid of capsule endoscopy and balloon enteroscopy.
