Elderly care
The department of medicine for the elderly specializes in the care of frail older people with complex problems such as delirium, dementia, difficulty walking and falls. Inpatient services focus on acutely ill elderly people. The rehabilitation ward provides specialist rehabilitation planning for patients referred for rehabilitation. Outpatient services include general and specialist clinics, memory, falls and Parkinson’s which are run on site and in the community.
Services are run at St Mary’s Hospital with a strong focus on comprehensive elderly assessment, multidisciplinary teamwork and discharge planning. We work closely with a range of other internal and external specialties and care agencies.
St Mary’s hospital has 40 acute beds and a consultant led intervention service in our acute admissions ward.

Outpatients and ambulatory
- Specialist movement disorders outpatients clinic
- Specialist multidisciplinary falls outpatients clinic in partnership with community falls intervention service
- Medicine for the elderly outpatients clinic (comprehensive elderly assessment)
- Consultant day hospital assessments
- Specialist multidisciplinary Parkinson’s assessment clinic run in the community
- Consultant home visit service
Inpatients
- Acute consultant-led comprehensive elderly assessment service (OASIS service)
- Acute inpatient medicine for the elderly service
- Consultant led inpatient rehabilitation in the community Athlone House and Alexander Rehabilitation unit
- Acute consultant-led orthopaedic elderly medicine service

- Acute inpatient beds are on Victoria and Albert wards in the Dumbell Building, South Wharf Road
- Clinics are held at St Mary’s Hospital, St Charles Hospital and at community based sites
