Breast screening services

Breast services are run by a multidisciplinary team comprising of surgical, oncology, pathology and radiology professionals.

It includes the West of London Breast Screening Service (WoLBSS) and symptomatic breast services based at Charing Cross and St Mary’s hospitals. WoLBSS is based at Charing Cross Hospital and currently provides three-yearly screening for women aged 50-70 across west London via the static unit at St Mary’s Hospital and mobile screening vans. Assessment facilities are available at Charing Cross Hospital for those patients with screen detected abnormalities, where all diagnostics are carried out on the same day.

The symptomatic service provides a rapid diagnostic service with triple assessment being available to those who require it. After referral by a GP, patients with breast lumps are assessed according to agreed protocols, subject to clinical examination and radiological imaging with the aim of providing a diagnosis at the end of that day.

All patients referred by a GP to the symptomatic service can expect to have an appointment within 14 days.

Treatments for breast cancer including surgery, reconstruction, sentinel node biopsy and chemotherapy are undertaken on site using state-of-the-art techniques and contemporary protocols.
