The allergy service at Imperial is one of the few comprehensive allergy services for adults in the UK. The allergy service offers a full range of diagnostic and therapeutic services for adults with allergic diseases. Our consultants are always happy to discuss clinical problems and possible referrals, so please do not hesitate to get in touch.
Anaphylaxis
- Immediate reactions to food
- Insect sting and venom allergy
- Drug allergy
- Allergic reactions with no clear cause
- Latex Allergy
Dermatology
- Assessment for allergic triggers to acute and chronic urticaria/angioedema
Respiratory/ENT
- Allergic triggers of asthma for asthma management, please refer to the chest clinic, or clinical nurse specialist asthma clinic)
- Chronic rhinosinusitis and nasal polyposis
- Moderate to severe allergic rhinoconjunctivitis
- Vocal Cord Dysfunction
Drug allergy
- Evaluation of reactions to antibiotics
- Evaluation of reactions to vaccines
- Evaluation of reactions to general anaesthetics
- Evaluation of reactions to local anaesthetics
- Evaluation of reactions to other drugs including analgesics and radiocontrast media
Immunotherapy
- To grass pollen (sublingual and subcutaneous)
- To bee and wasp venom
Adolescent clinic
Please note that patients with eczema and contact dermatitis should (in the first instance) be referred to a dermatologist, not to the allergy service. Referrals for patients with other medical conditions than those listed (such as dermatological conditions, chronic fatigue syndrome or irritable bowel syndrome) will be returned, recommending referral to an appropriate specialist.
We offer the following specialist investigations
- Skin prick testing for immediate hypersensitivity to specific allergens such as inhalants, food, venom, latex
- Blood testing for specific IgEs (‘RAST’) and other immunology investigations if indicated
- Component allergen testing for complex allergy cases
- Lung function testing if indicated
- Drug allergy skin prick testing
- Drug allergy: intradermal testing
- Challenge testing (drugs), a weekly clinic
- Challenge testing (local anaesthetics), fortnightly
- Challenge testing (foods), (once every 2 months
Treatments include
- Allergen avoidance (direct referral to dietetics for food allergy)
- Medication
- Anaphylaxis self management plans and Epi-pen training
- Omalizumab for severe atopic asthma
- Immunotherapy for hayfever (subcutaneous injection or sublingual tablet)
- Immunotherapy for venom anaphylaxis
- Desensitisation to antibiotics/analgesics
