Trauma and orthopaedics

St Mary’s Hospital provides comprehensive paediatric and adult musculoskeletal services, and in particular elective and non-elective orthopaedic surgery. The surgical service is supported by a physician-led model of care which links and interfaces with both health and social services.

Emergency service

  • On-site consultant in orthopaedic trauma from 08.00 to 20.00 with dedicated residential team of SpR and SHO 24 hours
  • Daily trauma lists with dedicated post-operative trauma beds
  • Consultant physician-led rehabilitation of trauma patients  

Outpatient facilities (all consultant-led)

  • Daily trauma clinics with direct access to A&E and community doctors
  • Weekly specialist clinics, including regional referral expertise in the orthopaedic subspecialties of:
    • Foot and ankle
    • Hip and knee including re-replacement
    • Shoulder and elbow
    • Spine
    • Paediatrics
    • Physiotherapy extended scope practitioners

Inpatient facilities

  • Dedicated orthopaedic ward with separate trauma and elective beds
  • Extremely low rates of hospital acquired infection with isolation facilities available
  • Day surgery encouraged and low lengths of stay due to efficient pre-assessment and post-operative early recovery at home programmes

Research interests
The department has research commitments including a multinational study of proximal humeral fractures, involvement in a national study of rotator cuff disease and research fellows working in conjunction with SORA/biomedical engineering.
