The main roles of the research and development (R&D) department at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust are to assist researchers and to ensure that all research carried out on any of our sites meets the Research Governance Framework for Health and Social Care standards set by the Department of Health.

We also play a key role in making sure that research breakthroughs and innovations are used to benefit our patients as quickly as possible.
Last year researchers at the Trust produced over 2,500 research publications. Read more in our 2007/08 annual report.
Effective use of resources
We advise Trust researchers on all aspects of project management. We have a comprehensive database of research projects and work in close partnership with our university colleagues to help ensure resources in the research community are used most effectively.
Our responsibilities
In addition to advising researchers, we issue formal approval for Trust research projects to begin and are involved in monitoring their progress, undertaking research audit and reporting research findings. We take part in costing, pricing and approving of commercial research. We also have the authority to close down projects when necessary.
