The rheumatology research unit at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust is based at the clinical trials unit of the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology at Charing Cross Hospital.

We carry out research into the two key types of arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, and associated conditions.

Our primary research aims are:
• Improving patient care
• Increasing our understanding the biology of arthritis
• Developing more effective measures of success for new treatments

We are closely associated with the Arthritis Research Campaign charity.

Key breakthroughs
Researchers at the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology played a major role in developing TNF-alpha blockers, one of the most effective treatments for rheumatoid arthritis.

Clinical trials
We generally have between five and ten clinical trials running at any one time, involving patients from the Trust and volunteers from the general public.
