The paediatric research unit (PRU) at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust is based at St Mary’s Hospital, on the seventh floor of the Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother (QEQM) building adjacent to the paediatric intensive care unit and wards.
Our research focuses on the common conditions that affect children in our local population, in north-west London. These conditions include:
• Asthma and allergic rhinitis
• Food allergy
• Sickle cell anaemia
• Respiratory infections
• Infectious diseases, particularly HIV and tuberculosis
• Diabetes
• Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
• Cerebral palsy
• Muscular dystrophies
One particular type of research that we specialise in is the study of sleep, known as polysomnography. There are significant interactions between sleep and disease in many of the conditions outlined above.
Clinical trials
Our aim is to have between five and ten clinical trials running at any one time. For details of our current trials and how they are organised, go to our clinical trials section. You can also find out more about taking part in research.
Research involving children and adolescents is one of the major themes of the Trust’s biomedical research centre programme.
