The Sir John McMichael Centre is based at Hammersmith Hospital and is one of the main research centres at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. It was set up in 2000 to investigate new treatments for a number of medical conditions. Researchers from the centre have carried out around 150 studies, many of international importance.
The facilities at the Sir John McMichael Centre include:
• Dedicated inpatient beds
• An outpatient area
• Consultation rooms
• A dedicated room for patients receiving gene therapy
• An information centre for use by patients and their families

We offer a supportive and relaxed environment for our patients, who we treat as partners in our work.
Early cancer trials unit
The initial focus of research at the Sir John McMichael Centre was medical conditions such as diabetes. This has now been expanded with the development of the early cancer trials unit, which tests new drugs specifically designed to combat cancer.
The unit shares its site and many facilities with the department of oncology at Hammersmith Hospital. This benefits patients and the quality of research. Because we also have our own staff, equipment and space, we can ensure that there is a coordinated approach to clinical trials. We can ensure they are carried out wherever is more appropriate, and the lessons of the trials can be applied directly for the benefit of our cancer patients.
We also have our own staff of cancer nurses who are fully trained in chemotherapy treatments.
