Liver disease is the fifth most common cause of death in the UK. In contrast to other common conditions, the number of people dying from the disease is increasing.

The Robert Hesketh hepatology research unit at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust aims to provide care and develop new treatments to help reverse this trend.

Our research focuses on several key areas:
• Alcoholism and alcoholic liver disease
Fatty liver disease
Chronic hepatitis B and C infection
Liver cell and bile duct cancers
Fibrosis (hardening) and cirrhosis (severe scarring) of the liver
Stem cells
