The pulmonary hypertension service at Hammersmith Hospital is part of Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, the UK's first academic health science centre. We have a pioneering programme of clinical and basic science research into pulmonary hypertension.
Although our understanding of pulmonary hypertension has dramatically improved in recent years, there remains much that we do not know. There is a great opportunity to improve the methods we use to diagnose and treat this condition in the future.
Funding
Our research programme is funded by research organisations including the British Heart Foundation and the Medical Research Council.
Current focus
Our research programme is constantly evolving. Our current interests focus on clinical trials that investigate new treatments, and the development of non-invasive imaging (cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and echocardiography) and new blood tests to improve diagnostic assessment and long-term follow-up of pulmonary hypertension.
Publications
We publish original scientific papers and reviews in the medical literature. You can read more in our Recent publications section.
Patient involvement
We ask many of our patients if they are willing to participate in clinical research. All research is approved by the hospital's ethics committee. Patients are given written information about the research and are given time to think about whether they would like to take part. There is no obligation to take part, and refusal to take part will not prejudice their medical care.
We can only offer participation in research studies that are carried out at Hammersmith Hospital.
When we plan new clinical research projects we often ask patients for their views about the project concerned.
