September 2011 data

Charing Cross Hospital A&E service is provided by the emergency department and the urgent care centre.

The emergency department receives patients for the hyper-acute stroke unit and cancer emergencies across the region. The urgent care centre is run in partnership with London Central & West Unscheduled Care Collaborative and Central London Community Healthcare NHS Trust. It is GP led and is open 24 hours a day. GPs perform the patients’ initial clinical assessment to decide if they need to receive care in the urgent care centre by its GPs and emergency nurse practitioners, or need to be seen in the emergency department.

The Trust has developed an action plan in conjunction with the London Ambulance Service and Charing Cross Hospital is consistently in the top five hospitals in London for the shortest time between patients arriving by ambulance to the handover of their care to our staff. Charing Cross also performs consistently in the top five London hospitals when using the ambulance service electronic handover system.

Our time to initial assessment has been reduced to 20 minutes. For the month of September there were 6622 emergency attends at Charing Cross Hospital. Of these patients, 98 per cent were seen and discharged or admitted within four hours.

The Trust is reviewing our reattendance data to understand why patients return to our emergency departments within seven days and we are currently working with our teams and partners in the community to:

• Implement shared care plans for patients who attend frequently when another care provider is more appropriate
• Improve information for patients with certain conditions so they know what to expect
• Explore options other than emergency department for patients who are not from the local area

For September we are currently validating our reattends data and will publish with October’s figures.

The teams across the hospital work hard to ensure patients do not exceed the four hour wait and are auditing and reviewing current plans in preparation for the winter period, which is traditionally busier.

As a Trust we are committed to reviewing the pathway for patients requiring admission to ensure patients are transferred safely and quickly to an appropriate ward.
