Charing Cross Hospital

Charing Cross Hospital A&E service is provided by the emergency department and the urgent care centre.
The emergency department receives patients for the hyper-acute stroke unit and cancer emergencies across the region. The urgent care centre is run in partnership with London Central & West Unscheduled Care Collaborative and Central London Community Healthcare NHS Trust. It is GP led and open 24 hours a day. GPs perform the patients’ initial clinical assessment to decide if they need to receive care in the urgent care centre by its GPs and emergency nurse practitioners, or need to be seen in the emergency department.

In March the Charing Cross site saw 7166 emergency attends, 97.54 per cent of who were seen and discharged within four hours.

Our time to initial assessment for ambulance arrivals has improved this month and Charing Cross Hospital continues to perform well when using the London Ambulance Electronic Handover system data.

Our emergency department should only be used in an emergency situation. We know that there are patients that attend our emergency department on a frequent basis.

We are helping these patients find services that are most suited to their needs - through their GP, walk-in centres, pharmacies or by contacting NHS Direct. This group of patients may include those who are not registered with a GP.

The teams across the hospital work hard to ensure patients do not exceed the four hour wait  Winter time is traditionally our busiest period and in March we worked to our well practiced winter plans

As a Trust we are committed to reviewing the pathway for patients requiring admission to ensure patients are transferred safely and quickly to an appropriate ward.

We are also working on pathways for a number of conditions to provide appropriate services that will avoid the need for admission.
